In yesterday’s release of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) comprehensive review, ‘Treatment for Pediatric Gender Dysphoria’, HHS has justly repudiated the prior unsafe and harmful approach of transgender medical interventions and so called ‘gender affirming’ procedures for children and adolescents dealing with gender dysphoria and gender confusion.
HHS’ thorough and unbiased review identified on-going risks and irreversible damage being done to children with gender incongruence in the name of gender ideology. Puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, related surgeries and other transgender procedures are not care and are not medicine. Such procedures violate respect for the inherent natural goodness and dignity of every child and young person. All children are owed love, compassion, and authentic medical care for mind, body and soul. Because of this new HHS review and the overwhelming medical evidence, I believe we as a nation have finally reached a tipping point on this heart-rending and disturbing issue.
The HHS review actually follows the medical evidence and confirms what more liberal governments around the world already have declared – social and medical transitioning of children is dangerous, harmful and unethical. Indeed, under the left-leaning Labor Government, the United Kingdom banned puberty blockers last year.
Our last administration along with most of the traditional media and many in the medical profession sadly ignored the mounting evidence and the increasing number of adolescents and young adults who are detransitioning and crying out for help asking for an end to these immoral practices. It is time for our civil society – with the leadership and support of our government – to end this public-sanctioned abuse and to get back to treating and protecting the child.
We applaud the Presidential Administration and HHS for this landmark step in the right direction for protecting and caring for children dealing with gender incongruence. We call upon Congress to take further legislative action to protect children from harmful and unethical procedures, to uphold the medical conscience rights of health care professionals who appropriately decline to support gender ideology, and to empower ethical dignified care for children and young people. The Christ Medicus Foundation looks forward to working with the government and medical organizations to educate health communities and protect the human dignity, health, and civil rights of every child.
