CMF Urges Congress to Extend the Moratorium on Taxpayer Funding of the Abortion Industry
Statement by Louis Brown Jr., J.D., Executive Director, Christ Medicus Foundation
This July 4th, as America celebrates its 250th birthday, our hard-earned taxpayer money could once again begin flowing to Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers unless Congress acts.
Last year, Christ Medicus Foundation (CMF) applauded the provision in the One Big Beautiful Bill that defunded Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers. Unfortunately that moratorium against taxpayer monies going to the abortion industry ends on July 4, 2026, our Semiquincentennial; but it does not have to.
Christ Medicus Foundation is pleased to co-sign a letter with 59 other national and state-wide pro-life organizations calling on Congressional leadership in the House and Senate to continue defunding the abortion industry. Congress has a moral, ethical, and fiscal obligation to continue the moratorium. The principles of justice and human dignity obligate Congress to stop sending hundreds of millions of dollars to an abortion industry that destroys unborn life and victimizes pregnant mothers.
Through the Hyde Amendment, Congress for decades has had a bipartisan commitment to protecting the conscience rights of taxpayers who have a moral objection to abortion. The principle of no taxpayer funding of abortion should be broadened to ensure that no federal tax dollars go to any organization or entity that kills unborn children and harms pregnant mothers.
In our Policy Agenda for Life and Religious Freedom, CMF and the Institute for Policy and Advocacy at the Catholic Health Care Leadership Alliance called upon Congress to permanently ban taxpayer funding of the abortion industry. We urge Congress to extend the moratorium against funding abortion providers. We also implore Congress to permanently ban funding of the abortion industry. Defunding the abortion industry will protect the life of thousands of unborn children, protect mothers and families, and help begin a new era in the United States as we begin our next 250 years.
Founded in 1997, the Christ Medicus Foundation accomplishes its mission by promoting public policy and education, supporting Christ-centered pro-life medical centers, and providing our CURO Catholic Health and Wellness Program. Through these efforts we strive to bring Christ’s healing love back into health care.
