‘Women’s Health Protection Act’ Set for Senate Vote Today

“Could this be the year that Roe v. Wade is overturned? Or is this the year that pro-life health care is made illegal? Or both?” asked Jordan Buzza, Director of Christ Medicus Foundation’s CURO health care community. “While we wait for the Supreme Court’s decision this summer in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, pro-life Americans face an immediate threat when the U.S. Senate votes on the deceptively named Women’s Health Protection Act, which instead of seeking to help women during pregnancy, only seeks to protect, promote, and expand abortion,” he said.

The Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) is a radical and horrific bill which would essentially codify abortion on demand at all stages of pregnancy in federal law and override nearly all anti-abortion laws at the state level, including laws governing ultrasound and babies born due to failed abortions. Aborting babies because of sex or possible disability would be allowed in states where it is not today.

The WHPA would also effectively shred much of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, thereby removing conscience protections for Catholic medical professionals and healthcare entities, meaning that nurses and doctors would be forced to perform abortions and other unethical procedures and employers would be forced to insure such procedures.

Further, this legislative action is just one of many bills and federal policy initiatives seeking to expand abortion and restrain pro-life care and culture. The Department of Health and Human Services is expected to propose troubling regulatory action in April that will target Catholic and pro-life health care. It would compel medical professionals and healthcare institutions to perform abortions and other unethical procedures that violate their conscience and religious beliefs.

“Even if the Women’s Health Protection Act fails in the Senate, the Biden Administration is still set to take up the mantle against pro-life care through coercive HHS regulation. Such laws or policies would prohibit medical professionals of faith and faith-based medical institutions from living out their mission to love the poor and the vulnerable,” said Buzza.

“Our Lord is watching in sorrow; yet He also responds to our prayers. Prayer is our most powerful ally in our battle against the evil of abortion. At the same time, we need to question how we live out our faith and values in our everyday lives. It’s time to take our pro-life beliefs into the world. This includes the obvious but overlooked healthcare marketplace. Does your insurance company cover abortion?

“Each person is made in the image and likeness of God with infinite worth. Health care in America should reflect this, making God’s love present, upholding every patient’s dignity, and protecting the religious freedom of every medical professional to love and care for their patients.  Of foundational and upmost importance in health care is the very right to life, from conception to natural death.  If the pro-abortion lobby has its way, though, abortion will be protected, promoted, and expanded in America, and God the Divine Physician and those who follow Him will be restrained from practicing pro-life care,” said Buzza.
